In Service Distributions: Q&A

Question: Can my clients take a distribution from their 401(k) while they’re still employed?

Bottom Line: The general rule is that individuals cannot take a distribution from their 401(k) until a triggering event occurs (for example, they terminate employment or retire). However, if the 401(k) plan document permits, they may be able to take a distribution of certain employer contributions even while they are still working.
